iPhone Screen Repair Overview
You have a few options to approach iPhone screen repairs. The iPhone repair service at Apple costs around $199 and is the most expensive option. There are a variety of 3rd party vendors that charge anywhere between $100 - $150 for full service. The DIY kit purchased off the Internet will cost right around $70 and is the least expensive option.
Use caution on cheaper kits sold off eBay as these are usually of lower quality components and have a tendency to fail. Also, many of these kits do not contain the proper tools to successfully perform an iPhone screen repair. If you want to do it right with less hassel use a reputable 3rd party service company that uses quality parts. Cnet review has a good artilce that talks about dealing with a cracked iPhone screen and repair.
Note that by replacing the screen yourself, or having a third-party perform the repair, you may violate Apple's warranty. The warranty does not cover "damage caused by service (including upgrades and expansions) performed by anyone who is not a representative of Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider."

iPhone 3G vs. 3Gs
The glass screen, digitizer, and LCD is different between these two models. The screen parts are not compatible across the iPhone models. Make sure you purchase the correct parts for the model iPhone your perfoming the glass repair on. The screen repair on the 3G and 3Gs is much easier than the original iPhone where screen layers are glued to the iPhone. Many repair sites try and scare you off from doing the work yourself. If you've ever replaced memory or a hard drive on a desktop computer you should be able to perform an iPhone screen repair.
iPhone 2G (Original)
The screen replacement process is difficult on this model. If you have a cracked glass on the iPhone 2G you should consider selling it as parts on Ebay or purchase a used replacement screen and frame assembly as one. This part is essentially an iPhone without the system board. Then all you need to is remove the system board from the old iPhone and install it in the new frame assembly. If you do decide to attempt to replace the screen expect to spend hours trying to remove the previous screen. It take patience and luck to not damage the digitizer or LCD while perfomring this removal.

What Screen Part Do I Need?
The iPhone "screen" is really 3 layers that include a glass front panel, a digitizer which is attached to the glass panel, and an LCD which sits behind the top 2 layers. The glass panel and digitizer come as a single part from the manufacture. This piece is never seperate and this is what you purchase. In most cases, the glass breaks but the LCD and touch screen (digitizer) continues to operate fine. In this case you only require the front glass replacement part. If the LCD is cracked or damaged you would require the glass\digitizer along with a new LCD.
