iPhone 3G/3Gs - iPhone Battery Replacement Overview

3G Battery Replacement OverviewThe iPhone battery replacement process for the 3G and 3Gs is identical except for a few key differences.  The 3Gs has an additional system board connector that needs to be disconnected.  This connector is located near the warranty sticker on the system board that indicates "Do Not Remove".  The other difference is the capacity of the battery.  The OEM battery in the 3Gs is 1219mAh so it has slightly larger capacity than the 3G.  All iPhone batteries run at 3.7 volts so the batteries could be interchanged if your situation required.  The iPhone battery replacement process would be considered medium in difficulty.  If you feel comfortable opening a computer and swapping components you could perform this replacement.

The iPhone battery replacement process consists of removing the touch screen glass, system board, then the battery.  The battery actually sits below the system board and uses a sticky adhesive to keep it in place.  The battery connector is NOT soldered and uses 4 floating connector clips to make it's connection to the system board.  There are a total of 8 screw holding down the system board that need to be removed.  This battery replacement success rate is nearly 100% if you have the correct tools (unlike the iPhone 2G).  Use of a suction cup to remove the touch screen glass is critical to prevent damage to the glass and external areas.  Purchase your battery from a reputable reseller that includes all the tools you need and don't assume all batteries are created equal.  Follow these tips and your battery replacement process will be successful.

iPhone 2G - iPhone Battery Replacement Overview

iPhone 2G Battery Replacement OverviewThe iPhone battery replacement process for the 2G (original iPhone) is completely different than the iPhone 3G/3Gs.  The design of the device makes everything difficult including opening the case and removing the battery which is soldered in place.  There is a fairly high failure rate (10%-15%) even for the most experienced expert as the inside components are delicate.  Not many repair providers will work on this model because of the failure rate when opening the case and servicing the iPhone.  Care needs to be taken when removing the battery due to the dock ribbon connector being located under the battery.  There is a layer of clear glue covering the soldered battery connections.  This needs to be removed prior to unsoldering the battery.  There is a tendency for the soldered battery connectors to lift off the system board.  When this occurs it cannot be repaired and you'll require a new system board.

The iPhone battery replacement process consists of removing the back cover, unseating the battery and de-soldering the 3 battery wires from the system board.  This sounds simple but an inexperienced tech can expect to damage the back cover and will struggle throughout the process.  The plastic tools will not work for this replacement process and you'll need to rely on metal micro screw drivers to remove the back cover.  Follow the iPhone battery replacement video to perform this replacement.  Good Luck!

Top iPhone Battery Replacement & Battery Life Links

Here are some of the top links on Google that discuss iPhone battery replacement solutions.  Some of these articles discuss battery service options from AT&T and battery support FAQ from Apple.
Can your iPhone settings reduce battery performance?  Yes, our battery replacement resellers periodically see devices with settings not optimized properly for extended battery life.  For example, if the screen brightness is set to 100% this will increase battery power usage by 2x.  There are other settings that impact battery performance that all iPhone users should be aware of.  Also, there are cases where iPhone battery replacement is not necessary if these settings are optimized for extended life performance.  Visit our page that disucsses battery life optimization.

Note that by replacing the battery yourself, or having a third-party perform the repair, you may violate Apple's warranty. The warranty does not cover "damage caused by service (including upgrades and expansions) performed by anyone who is not a representative of Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider."  Apple's iPhone Warranty PDF does a good job in setting warranty repair expectations.

Do-It-Yourself - iPhone Battery Replacement - Article

The introduction of the iPhone in 2007 came with great expectations.  The iPhone offered a superior web browsing experience and user interface.  The direct to consumer sales channel through the Apple store was unique.  It immediately put pressure on Blackberry who was the leader in the smartphone industry at that time.  One of the big challenges that faced all smartphones was battery life and capacity.  In particular, Apple prefers a thin device design which limits the amount of space available for the internal battery.  It's also Apple's standard to use a closed battery enclosure which makes it more difficult to perform an iPhone battery replacement.

The first generation iPhone or 2G came out with much fanfare.  The 2G label is an indication of the compatibility of the wireless cell technology (Edge Network).  One of the challenges users faced with this new iPhone was battery life.  Users soon figured out they could change and tweak settings to increase the battery life.  Modifying the brightness, mail fetch options, and performing radio adjustments were all part of these early efforts to increase battery performance.  Unfortunately, as with all rechargable battery technology it is only good for so many battery charge and discharges.  In the case of the iPhone it turns out to be 300 to 400 charges.  The life of the battery starts to degrade soon after and eventually requires an iPhone battery replacement to be performed.

Does your iPhone battery need to be charged in the middle of the day to maintain functionality?  Does it seem like the iPhone is discharging at an increasing rate over time?  If yes, it may be time to evaluate an iPhone battery replacement or purchasing an external battery pack such as mophie or AmpJuice.  Determine how much time you have left on your AT&T contract and see if it makes sense to perform a battery replacement or spend a few dollars on a battery pack extender.  If you feel comfortable performing the iPhone battery replacement yourself you can save some money and it will change the dynamics of the equation.

The Art of iPhone Battery Life
Guy Kawasaki has a great iPhone battery life blog.  This is important to the iPhone battery replacement process because there are times when software settings can significantly impact battery life.  For example, if the brightness slider is set to 100% it will create a power draw roughly 2x than if the slider was at the 1/4 position.  Don't replace the battery unless it's absolutely necessary.
