iPhone 3G Screen Repair Overview
Overview:  The iPhone 3G glass and LCD screen repair can be completed by most people with avarage technical ability.  The iPhone 3G screen is made up of 3 core layers which is the glass/digitizer, midframe, and LCD.  You first need to determine which components are broken.  If the glass is broken but the LCD screen still displays the image correctly then you only need the glass/digitizer component.  If both the glass is broken and the LCD is not displaying correctly, then you need both the glass/digitizer and LCD.

iPhone Screen Replacement

The iPhone screen components are layered in the following order.  The glass/digitizer is fixed to the midframe with double sided tape.  The LCD attaches to the bottom side of the mid-frame.  It's critical no dust or debris gets between the screen and the LCD as this will be visible when the iPhone is powered on.

If glass/digitizer is cracked or the touch functionality does not work you require the glass/digitizer part
For severe drops, you could require both the glass/digitizer screen and LCD

If the LCD display does not light up or certain parts of the screen do not display then you require the LCD part
The parts between the 3G and 3Gs are not compatible between the two model iPhones

iPhone Screen Repair Overview
Overview:  The iPhone 4 screen manufacturing process is different than the iPhone 3G 3Gs.  The LCD is fused to the glass/digitizer so you don't have the option of just replacing individual components.  To properly replace the iPhone screen, you need the whole assembly that includes the glass/digitizer and LCD in a single unit.  More iPhone Screen Repair details can be found on www.iMobileDoctor.com.

iPhone 3G
The battery specification for the iPhone 3G is 1150mAh.  The iPhone battery replacement process for the iPhone 3G is identical to the iPhone 3Gs model.  The battery is located under the motherboard and sits inside the back cover base.  It's highly recommended to use a suction cup to remove the glass touch screen.  This model iPhone uses a floating tri-connector for it's connection to the motherboard and does not require the use of a soldering iron.  There are 6 electronic connectors that need to be disconnected in order to remove the motherboard and gain access to the iPhone's battery bay.  Individuals with moderate electronic assembly skills can successfully perfomr the iPhone battery replacement process.

iPhone 2G (Original)
The battery specification for the iPhone 2G is 1400mAh.  The iPhone battery replacement process for the iPhone original is difficult.  The back cover is very hard to remove without damaging it and the battery is soldered into the system board.  There's a thin layer of glue covering the soldered connections that needs to be pulled off without damaging the connectors.  If the battery wires accidentially lift off the system board with the circuit foil you'll require a new system board.  There are countless other items that can go wrong causing additional problems with the iPhone.  The majority of the service providers out there will not work on this particular model due to the poor service design.  Only work on this model iPhone if you have advanced electronic assembly skills. Note: There is a small percentage of iPhone's that will experience issues after the battery replacement process.

iPhone Battery Replacement - Issues and Challenges

iPhone 3Gs & 3G
  • Difficulty in removing the iPhone touch screen glass
    • Solution: Battery reseller must include a suction cup for glass removal.
  • Difficulty in reconnecting ribbon connector #3 during reassembly process
    •  Solution: Bend ribbon with your finger so it feeds into the connector easier and if necessary use a tweezers to assist with feeding the cable connector into the slot.
  • iPhone freezes during the boot process on the Apple symbol after the battery replacement process
    • Solution: Proximity sensor may have failed during the battery replacement.  Disconnect the ribbon cable that controls the proximity sensor and see if the iPhone boots normally.
  • Difficulty in seating the system board during the reassembly process
    • Solution: Insert the SIM tray side of the system board into the casing first.  Work it until the system board can be dropped into place and the screw holes align properly.
iPhone 2G (Original)
  • Difficulty in removing the aluminum back cover to gain access to the battery bay
    • Solution: Use small metal tools and leverage the side out while putting pressure on the top up and the same time.  There will be minor damage with the case removal.  Try and reform the case to original shape proir to installing the back cover.
  • Home button no longer works after battery replacement process
    • Solution: Dock connector ribbon cable that runs under the battery may have been damaged during battery removal.  This is usually due to using a screw driver to leverage the battery out in the wrong position.  Replace the dock connector cable to correct this problem.
  • Difficulty in removing glue covering battery wire connectors
    • Solution: Use an exacto razor blade to carve out the glue.  Use a needlenose pliers to pull out the glue on the connectors.  Caution: If the wire battery connectors lift off the system board this cannot be fixed.  Use extreme caution during this process.
  • Difficulty in removing heat shrink wrap off the positive battery wire
    • Solution: Some of the iPhone replacement batteries have the heat shrink wrap too tight around the wire.  Loosen the wrap on the red wire prior to installing the battery.  This will make it easy to remove the wrap when the time comes to solder the red wire.
  • No boot after replacement battery installation
    • Solution: The red battery wire may have shorted on the iPhone case (ground).  Check the voltages between the red positive wire and the other two wires (black & white).  This should show around 3.7 volts between these sets of wires.  If there is no voltage then the battery was shorted and you'll need a replacement battery.  Also, try and perform a forced reboot on the iPhone by pressing the power and home button at the same time for 8 seconds.
